Rio Maker Space

A volunteer makerspace community in Rio de Janeiro that develops projects and runs workshops and events across electronics, computing, digital fabrication, and science.

Rio Maker Space (RMS) is a volunteer makerspace community based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It provides a collaborative setting for people to work, learn, teach, and develop technology projects, with an emphasis on shared knowledge and practical experimentation.1

The present organization adopted the Rio Maker Space name on February 17, 2021, continuing the work of a volunteer collective whose history dates to 2015.2

History

The collective began in mid-2015 with the goal of establishing a collaborative space for electronics, telecommunications, computing, security research, hardware hacking, robotics, automation, microcontrollers, digital fabrication, and related scientific work. Its first formal initiative was Carioca Hacker Space (CHS), founded on July 25, 2016.2

CHS merged with Rio Hacker Space in 2018 to form Rio Hacker Maker Space (RHMS). That merger ended by mutual agreement on February 17, 2021: Rio Hacker Space continued independently, while the maker collective formed the current Rio Maker Space organization. During the COVID-19 pandemic, its activities moved online before in-person activity became possible again.2

Purpose and activities

RMS describes its mission as supporting education, maker culture, science, and access to mechanical and microelectronic prototyping. Its areas of interest include embedded systems, electronics, precision agriculture, Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things, 3D printing and CNC machining, scientific instrumentation, experimental physics, materials science, and aerospace projects. The organization aims to help turn ideas into prototypes and prototypes into useful products or solutions.3

The community runs practical workshops in subjects including Arduino, electronics soldering, programming, digital culture, robotics, and automation.4 Its project archive includes the UIARA rocket, developed for the 2019 Latin American Space Challenge with partners at CBPF and UFRJ, and a helium research balloon carrying environmental, radiation, GPS, and telemetry instrumentation.5

Arduino Day

RMS organizes Rio de Janeiro editions of Arduino Day, a celebration intended to bring people together to share projects and learn about the open-source Arduino platform.6 The 2025 edition was hosted by RMS and Julio Azevedo at Porto Maravalley on March 29, from 09:00 to 17:00. Its program advertised project and prototype displays involving educational robotics, telecommunications, audiovisual experiments, artificial intelligence, rockets, and satellites, alongside talks and practical activities.7

At that event, Rodrigo Laneth presented Rina, a return moe demonstration character powered by a language model running on a cloud GPU. The presentation taught attendees with no previous AI-character-design experience how prompting and context could define a conversational character, while a self-hosted ComfyUI demonstration covered the generation of visual character assets. Both services ran on Laneth’s dedicated cloud GPU instance, and attendees interacted with Rina through a laptop at the venue.
