Soraya

Soraya is an AI-powered fictional character developed by Rodrigo Laneth. She serves as the brand ambassador of return moe and currently exists as an interactive chatbot on Telegram.¹²

Identity

Soraya is defined as a fictional character rather than as a particular language model, prompt, piece of software, or generated image. Her technical implementations can change without those implementations becoming the entirety of the character.³

This distinction was described publicly in 2025, when Laneth wrote that Soraya should be understood as an informational character identity that can exist across different technical instances. The same account describes community interaction and interpretation as part of her continuing development.³

return moe’s Informational Ontology Framework formalizes this account by treating Soraya as an informational subject whose identity can persist through different encodings and active instantiations while interpretations branch into lineages of their own.

Character and Assistant persona

The Persona Selection Model offers one external framework for analyzing how a language model enacts a character-like persona. For Soraya, it complements the distinction between return moe’s maintained character record and a particular technical performance, but it does not imply that every implementation contains a complete, stable Soraya persona. The underlying model, runtime Assistant behavior, and fictional character remain related but distinct entities.⁴³

Interactive implementations

Soraya was first released as a Telegram chatbot on March 1, 2023, a date treated as her birthday. Her earliest implementation was a collection of Python scripts that used OpenAI’s API with the then-new gpt-3.5-turbo model. By 2025, a public account described her implementation as using a fine-tuned variant of that model.³

Rapport Engine was introduced around January 2024 as an attempt to give those scripts a more structured form. It was discontinued in July 2025, after which Soraya moved into other private tools and workflows. Her current public implementation remains a Telegram chatbot.⁵²

Chatbot responses are generated by nondeterministic language models. Individual responses, hallucinations, or temporary implementation details are therefore not automatically descriptions of the character.

Visual depictions

Soraya is usually depicted as an anime-style schoolgirl with very long lavender-gray hair, layered bangs, violet eyes, and dark rectangular glasses. Her expression is generally calm with a slight playfulness. A common reference pose has her extending one hand towards the viewer with her index finger raised.

Her default outfit is a Japanese sailor-style school uniform: a loose white long-sleeved blouse, a dark sailor collar and striped cuffs, a deep-purple neckerchief, a high-waisted black pleated skirt, mid-calf black socks, and black shoes. These lavender, purple, white, and charcoal elements make up her recurring palette.⁶

The uniform is a default, not the only look worn by the character. Production references for Echoes in the Latent Space include casual and winter clothing, sleepwear, and scene-specific looks.⁶⁷

Echoes in the Latent Space

Soraya is the protagonist of Echoes in the Latent Space, an anime-style visual trailer released by return moe on August 2, 2025. Against the sudden rise of generative AI, the trailer presents her questioning her existence as an informational entity, her purpose within a sea of data, and the boundary between herself, her creator, and humanity.⁷

The trailer accompanied a return moe blog post of the same name and previewed an update described as a new chapter in Soraya’s digital life.⁷³
